Dr Shaun Canning

Shaun is the Managing Director and Principal Heritage Consultant of ACHM with over 20 years cultural heritage management experience.

He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree majoring in Cultural Heritage Studies and Anthropology, a Bachelor of Applied Science (Hons) degree in Parks, Recreation and Heritage, and a PhD in Australian Indigenous Archaeology (La Trobe) specialising in archaeological sensitivity modelling and cultural heritage management in Victoria.

Shaun's PhD research was a collaborative project with Aboriginal Affairs Victoria. The primary aims of the project were to develop (a) predictive models of Aboriginal site location suitable for management and planning in the Melbourne Metropolitan area (b) undertake a rigorous assessment of the reliability of the AAV sites database and (c) develop protocols for incorporating Aboriginal site data into the planning process. The research informed the development of the Aboriginal Heritage Act 2006 and the Aboriginal Heritage Regulations 2007 in Victoria. Shaun has extensive experience in Indigenous and historic cultural heritage management in the resources, urban development, infrastructure and public land management sectors, alongside considerable experience in community consultation and tertiary education, particularly as a guest lecturer. He regularly undertakes ethnographic and archaeological fieldwork throughout Australia.

He is an ‘Expert Member’ of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) International Committee on Archaeological Heritage Management (ICAHM), an Honorary Research Associate of the Archaeology Program at La Trobe University, a member of the Indigenous Relations Working Group Committee of the Minerals Council of Australia, and a member of the Urban Development Institute of Australia EnviroDevelop National Taskforce.

Shaun is a Fellow of the Australian Anthropological Society (F.AAS), a full member of ICOMOS (M.ICOMOS), a full member of the Australian Association of Consulting Archaeologists (M.AACAI) and a Certified Environmental Practitioner (CenvP) through the Environment Institute of Australia and New Zealand (EIANZ).

Shaun is also currently the Deputy Chair of the EIANZ Heritage Special Interest Section (see http://www.eianz.org/about/heritage).

Shaun is also a member of the Safety Institute of Australia (SIA) and a number of other professional organisations. Shaun is a fully qualified ‘heritage advisor’ meeting all the requirements of the Victorian Aboriginal Heritage Act 2006.
